Diamond Certification
Diamond certification assures consumers an objective comparison while shopping for diamonds. Since many consumers are not experts, in order to be certain that the quality of the diamond being purchased meets industry standards, it is important that the diamond come with a diamond certificate. Also called a diamond grading report, diamond quality document, or diamond dossier, the report is put together by gemologists who have assessed the dimensions, clarity, polish, symmetry, and color of the diamond. In the diamond world, certification is considered the fifth C whereas the other four are carat weight, cut, color and clarity. The phrase “IGI certified” stands for the International Gemological Institute, which is just one of the independent gemological laboratories that issue certifications. Diamond certification also becomes important when reselling the stone. Furthermore, the certificate approximates the replacement value of the stone for insurance purposes.
