How To Tell If A Diamond Is Real
Diamonds can only be officially authenticated by certified gemologists who examine the stones thoroughly and carefully in order to assess their quality and validity. However, when shopping around a consumer can check by applying a few simple tests. If the stones are loose, the first thing to do is to put them over some text. If the text can be seen through the stone, then it is probably glass or crystal and therefore fake. Diamonds refract so much light that they are not transparent enough to look through. A small light can also be used to apply this test. Diamonds also do not fog up when breathed on because of their ability to conduct heat. However, a stone called moissanite also has this property so it is essential to trust the jeweler. Inclusions, small flaws within the diamond, can also help verify validity. Inclusions are common to diamonds so unless they are very expensive or inside a museum, they are bound to be present. If there seem to be no inclusions inside the stone when peered at, the stone is probably quartz. However, if there are bubbles or waves in the stone, then it is probably glass. Although diamonds are very durable, its not recommended to scratch a would-be diamond across metal or glass because it could end up damaging a real diamond, although not as harshly as a fake one. Lastly, good judgment comes in handy when trying to figure out if a stone is real or not. Chances are, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
